Dark circular blotch on upper operculum behind eye, and wide broken dark red-brown bars separated by light bars with diamond-shaped dark patches where these intersect the lateral line, unmarked translucent tail and dorsal spines with fine short tassels. Sits perched on thickened lower rays of its pectoral fins among sponges and corals.
