RLSF ANNUAL REPORT 2024

Some of this year's highlights include:

  • Our World Underwater Scholar Joins Survey Effort: In late 2023, RLS had the pleasure of welcoming OWUSS Scholar Sophie Kalkowski-Pope aboard a private surveying venture to learn the RLS methods. Sophie joined the team travelling from Darwin to Port Hedland, finding this to be an unforgettable chapter of her scholarship experience.
  • Biennial Lord Howe Island Surveys: RLS divers returned to Lord Howe Island in early 2024 to add a further 82 surveys across 32 sites to ongoing timeseries data. Through the collaborative efforts of RLS, the LHI Marine Park teams, and local dive operators, data from 45 monitoring sites enable RLS to report on the condition of LHI's shallow reefs, and identify ongoing and emerging trends.
  • Increasing Reef Life Survey's Digital Presence: Content publications over the 2023-24 financial year increased by >200% across Facebook and Instagram, coinciding with an overall increase in audience engagement and reach. Increased functionality of Reef Species of the World data resources saw website pageviews increase by 52%, totaling >323k views throughout the year.
