Juveniles easily recognised by their markings: Black with two blue lines from head sweeping up and back onto body, light band around middle, blue arc on upper back, blue on tail base behind dorsal fin, blue pelvic fins and blue rear margins of dorsal, tail and anal fins. Adult dark without distinctive markings, although often with light patch in middle of back. Best identified by elongated, rectangular shape and presence of juveniles. Very shallow reef flats.
