Temperate Australasia, Tropical Indo-Pacific
Description
Dark stripe from snout to tail base, oblique dark bars on upper and lower lobes of tail, brown speckled back and pale silver underside with scattered dark spots, dark blotch on tip of first dorsal and dark blotch and white tip on second dorsal. Distinguished from less common U. australiae (Australian Goatfish) by blotches on dorsal fins and spots on belly. Length to 30 cm.
Also referred to as the SGI (Species generalisation index), this describes the habitat niche breadth of the species.
Species with values less than 15 are found in a relatively narrow range of reef habitat types (specialists), while those over 25 may be found on most
hard substrates within their range (generalists). Learn more here
