Sydney Harbour/Botany Bay NSW, Dec 10-13 2009
January 26, 2010 by Rick
Following the Port Phillip Bay trip, we headed to Sydney, along with Bill Barker and Jen Hoskin who were also keen for the double RLS trip. Many thanks to the trained RLS volunteers that joined us – including Andrew Green, Kate Tinson, Andy Myers, Peter McGee, Margo and Ash Smith and 2 SIMS postdocs – Paul Gribben and Will Figueira. We were able to survey a number of transects around Bare Island and also went out with local Skipper Peter, organised through one of our favourite local dive shops Abyss Scuba (www.abyss.com.au). Again we’ve managed to find a Skipper that is happy to be flexible with site selection and dive time… not to mention happy to spend the surface intervaltime at Balmoral Beach drinking caramel lattes (see pic).
We would like to extend a big thankyou again to Carl Fallon from Abyss for organising tanks and boat and for local dive site info. We surveyed over 30 transects – including Bare Island, Botany Bay; and in Sydney Harbour sites included – Middle Head, Green Point and Camp Cove, Dobroyd Head, Neilsen Park, and Grotto Point. It proved another very successful Sydney RLS trip in terms of survey effort and was fantastic to get a bunch of experienced RLSers out together. Interesting finds included Sydney’s Pygmy Pipehorse (Idiotropiscis lumnitzeri) at Bare Island, velvet fish (Aploactisoma milesii) and some beautiful nudibranchs, including Pteraeolidia ianthina, Glossodoris atromarginata and Ceratosoma amoenum.
